I have been working on my own thoughts of evolution of a website. I was thinking about how to make this a timeline when I came across this. It reflects a good bunch of what I do as well.

A quick note which ifI remember I will update, if not posterity and haste.

I stumbled across the site and wanted to remember it for those times when I am working with CSS and need some inspiration. I opened my email to mail it to myself and then remembered that I had access to Blogger so that not only would I be able to remember it but Icould share it with all my avid readers.

Earth Day

After reading another blogs post on Earth Day, I couldn't help but record a few thoughts of my own. He reflected on Silent Spring and the tremondous changes that a single book written carefully but passionately made in the world.

When I stop to think about where my own concern for the environment comes from I have to stop and think of people and my own exposure to places.

In my mid twenties I had the opportunity to travel up a remote river in the Darien jungle. I saw a pair of macaws flitting from tree to tree. Until later I didn't realize what a rare sight it was.

Travelling a remote road in northern Saskatchewan I came across a herd of woodland caribou. I followed them slowly for several miles before they vanished. It wasn't till later that month I mentioned the sighting at a forestry conference that I realized what a rare sight that was. Several years later I had a conversation with a young fur trapper who had lived all his live in the area and had never seen what I had seen that morning.

Reflecting I think that the apalling thing to me is that there is very little chance that my children will see what I have seen. And on Earth day I have to pause and reflect wondering what I have done to try and make it possible for them...

Customer screen

SitePoint Blogs : Down To Business

Three simple criteria Compelling need, budget, timeline. First time that I have seen the three together though and it is intersting that it happens in the context of being equals. I'm not at all sure that it is the key to being equal but it is the key to being professional.

Great Questions and a long sales page

Asking Open-Ended Questions, asking closed-ended questions, closing skills, telephone techniques, prospecting, networking, Closing More Sales By Asking Better Questions

The Starbucks example drew me in and the relevancy to an area where I struggle with my marketing kept my attention. The amazing thing was that though I didn't buy this time, I am almost certain that at some point I will. Much of the stuff I know what I hadn't thought about was how it specifically applied to my business. It's almost enough to start a page on my site that reflects open ended questions that gets at the potential problems that someone who desires a website could be facing.

The real trick from where I stand is to clarify open ended questions that don't focus on features but on problems.

Telecom Analyst

Telecom analysts seem to run in packs. After my conversation yesterday with Tim Ventura about American Antigravity I realize that there is a wide range of interests in this field.

Practical Tips for the craziness in the world

How to Work Extremely Well

It's hard to imagine how hard it is to be practical about something so absolutely important. Too many of us get caught up in the rat race, in making money, in serving customers. In a former life I was always amazed when I came to a meeting prepared, (read the package, thought about the issues, have pertinent questions) how many people hadn't. Those few moments taken for thought were always well appreciated.

My point is that to be effective and productive in our work we need to be on top of things. And that means creating space for ourselves. Whether it is music or as in my case poetry, we need to do it.

Ryze business networking

Ryze business networking

It's taken a bit to warm up to Ryze networking. I try and spend an hour or two each week checking out pages and trying to find new contacts through Ryze. I can't say that it has worked for me yet but I'm sure that at some point the cows will come home.

Fake Microsoft security update website used to deliver Trojan horse, Sophos reports

Fake Microsoft security update website used to deliver Trojan horse, Sophos reports

Not often I feel an urge to write about security updates. But I recognize the paranoia that many people have about security and I suspect that this one that is going to nab a few people. A little caution goes a long way.

My thoughts return to a thesis that I read earlier this week comparing the need for antispam measures to take a similar approach to protection as public health has to say the HIV AIDS virus. Public education has as much to do with infection as sophisticated protection and cures. I wonder sometimes if like the simple public health measures, malware education has similiar problems in being popular. There isn't a lot of money to be made by public education. It is in the best interests of anticipatory and antivirus makers to keep the level of paranoia relatively high. That feeds directly into this trojan.

Site Owner Help directly from MSN

Site Owner Help

Some days you should just read the manual. Here it is straight from the horses mouth.

Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone

Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone

Written in 2002 but it still has a lot of great thought in a very clear simple presentation.

A lot of the comments about spiders is not as true as it once was. Virtual hosting is extremely common, and not a problem. Another good reason for using external javascript and CSS though.

People still don't believe my comments about page weight in general. Though 50% of Canadians have access to broadband, it is still a pleasure for them to surf light sites as well.

Email Delivery Rates Vary Wildly Among Domains -- MarketingVOX-

Email Delivery Rates Vary Wildly Among Domains - MarketingVOX

Timely note given the difficulty that I have had with clients email in the last two days. Email coming my way that didn't arrive. And their email going astray when sent to important clients. IP blocking at the mail server level accounts for most of it. I have never really had to deal with too much spam until late. Probably half of my email is now junk. Fortunately of that approximately 75% is handled by the filters in Thunderbird.

Customer Data Collection on the Web

Customer data collection on a website has to be one of the most challenging aspects of beginning to understand customer relationship management. It appears to be easy to ask for a lot of information but just like you don't usually ask someone to marry you on the first date - you don't ask for all the information you need at once. Three simple rules apply:

  1. Keep the forms simple. If all you need is an email address - only ask for an email address. Keep the system simple enough that as you gather more information you can keep it all together.
  2. Incrementally collect data. Obviously an email address isn't all the data that you ultimately need to make a sale. Work out exactly what you do need and then make sure the system will handle it.
  3. Verify customer information. Bad data is worse than no data. Not only does it waste resources but it also

Organizing - Good Advice - I guess

Expert Advice Tip Sheet -- Top Ten Motivators -- OnlineOrganizing.com

I never have been much on organizing partially I think as a result of an experience that I had in High School. I found it remarkably easy to arrange events and schedules to keep 600+ students busy for a full day. So like many things I never bothered to develop the habits necessary to make organizing work for me. These ten tips just resonate so strongly with me. (And the presentation format makes the point that people don't read - they scan.) Titles and bullets, no paragraphs

Blogs, Everyone?

Blogs, Everyone? Weblogs Are Here to Stay, but Where Are They Headed? - Knowledge@Wharton

Blogging is around to stay. I have files in this blog dating from 2001. That means I have been blogging for almost five years. I had a blog that I ran from my palm pilot for almost a year. I found that for blogging I needed to have accessibility and the pilot provided that. Of course, like many things it is a discipline to keep up. That would probably explain why there is a three year gap in the blog. I needed a soapbox to stand on. And I found that blog was not it. I can see an emerging role for it though in my small business. It lets people see an eclectic side to me but also gives them insight into the vast range of interests that I bring to their work.
